Purmandal is a small village which is under the jurisdiction of Jammu and is around 40 kms towards east, from the Jammu city. Purmandal is also referred to as 'Chhota Kashi'. This village is situated on the banks of the river Devika. Purmandal was an ancient center of trade and learning. The Purmandal Temple which is dedicated to 'Umpati' another name for Goddess Parvati, is one of the prime attractions of Purmandal. There are a number of temples built on rocks dedicated to Lord Shiva which presents an imposing sight. The significance of these temples and dharamshalas lies in the frescoes on their walls.
A Purmandal Mela is organized in Jammu during the month of February or March on the eve of Shivratri and during this time all the offerings and worship is done at the temples in Purmandal. The Purmandal Mela is actually a celebration of the marriage between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati was the darling daughter of the king of Himalayas who had arranged his daughter’s marriage with Lord Shiva after a lot of hesitation. The Purmandal Mela is a very spectacular event that is held every year at Kashmir with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm.
It is a three day long celebration because it is believed that three days were required for the couple Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, to be completely tied in marital bonds. The temples in Jammu along with the beautiful jaw dropping beauty of the background seem like an exquisite picture on canvas which is made by the splendor of the Supreme Artist's brush. Here one can find beauty in the form of rippling water flowing down the valley, the sunrise and sunset over the Blue Mountains and the unique dazzle of the dusk light over the snowy peaks. The Purmandal Mela just adds on more stars to the beauty of Jammu.
According to Hindu Mythologies, Lord Shiva had been a beggar who begged from door to door when his meditation was over. He was above the bond worldly riches. Parvati was the daughter of King of the Mountains called Himalayas. She was born and brought up in luxury and wealth. King Himalaya was keen not to marry his daughter to a beggar and so was against this nuptial and he was ignorant of the fact that Lord Shiva has surpassed the greed for the worldly riches.
But Parvati was keen on marrying Lord Shiva and thus her father gave up and agreed with his daughter. So, Purmandal Mela is held to commemorate the blissful moment when the Gods and Goddesses were married and people wear their best clothes and rush out of their house to find some amusement in the fair. In the Purmandal Mela one can find winter garments, fashion accessories, gents’ costumes and accomplices. People also celebrate Shivratri during this mela and the principle locales for the fĂȘte are Panjbhaktar Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple and the Peer Khoh.
