Dera Baba Banda is a major pilgrimage spot for sikhs as well as people of other communities. The 300-year-old Dera Baba Banda Bahadur has a historic gurdwara built by Baba Banda Bairaagi on the banks of river Chenab, which has the samadhi of Banda Bahadur. Baba Bahadur was Guru Gobind Singh`s favourite `Saint-soldier. At the gurdwara the ashes of Banda Bahadur and an arrow given to him by Guru Gobind Singh and other weapons, including a huge sword is also kept. The pilgrimage spot is situated at Reasi tehsil of Udhampur district which is approximately 75 km from Jammu and 30 kms from Katra. Every year an average of 30,000 devotees throng the mela a on Baisakhi day from northern India. The dera is run by mahant of the dera S. Jatinder Pal Singh.
Baba Banda Bahadur was a dedicated, fearless, strong and brave sikh warrior who gave his life fighting with the mughals. He was a true disciple of Guru Govind Singh, who headed the Banda troops and fought with the cruel Mughals who were forcefully carrying out conversions to Islam. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur named as Lachhman Dev alias Madho dass Bairagi, was originally from the Jammu region. He is referred to as one of the greatest Sikh warriors as well as a most hallowed martyrs of the Khalsa Army.
His strife with the Mughal administration in Northern India though was brief but was strong and vigorous enough to shake the foundations of the Mughals. The agrarian uprising that he led in the Punjab was the starting point after which the Dal Khalsa, the Sikh Misls and Maharaja Ranjit Singh built the edifice which finally culminated with Ranjit Singh capturing Lahore in 1799 and establishing the Sikh Kingdom of the Punjab, ending the dark period of Mughals. Baba Banda Bahadur was brutally murdered by the Mughals in 1716 to satisfy the disrespect and defeat they had to face due to Baba Banda Bahadur.
