The Indian state collectively known as Jammu & Kashmir is a disputed territory of India. Pakistan wants right to rule it and China too is on the look out to capture it. The state has three main regions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Jammu is a place known for its temples, shrines and other pilgrimage places. Kashmir Valley also known as Paradise on Earth is known for its enriched beauty and enchanting landscapes. Ladakh is also well known for its beautiful mountainous terrain and the Buddhist culture and monasteries.
The state of Jammu & Kashmir has an area of 222,236 km sq (85,806 sq mi). Its largest city is Srinagar and the winter capital is Jammu while the summer capital of the state is Srinagar. The state has 22 districts. Its population is 10,069,917 and population density is 45.31 /km sq (117 /sq mi). The languages chiefly spoken in the state are Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Pahari, Balti, Ladakhi, Punjabi, Gojri and Dadri, Kishtwari. Urdu written in the Persian script is the official language of the state. The Governor is Narinder Nath Vohra and there is President's Rule in the state.
Jammu & Kashmir was established in October 1947. Jammu was named after the Hindu Goddess Jamwa Mata and was founded by Ramchandra Ist, while Kashmir was derived from Ka meaning water and Shimeera meaning to dessicate so the word Kashmir means dessicated from water. Kashmir was in the history called Kashyap-Mar and Kashyap-Pura in honour of the sage Kashyapa who drained the lake to form the land of Kashmir.
There are many valleys in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The main valleys are Kashmir Valley, Tawi Valley, Chenab Valley, Poonch Valley, Sind Valley and Lidder Valley. Jhelum, Indus, Tawi, Chenab and Ravi are the major rivers that flow through Jammu & Kashmir. The population in Jammu & Kashmir mainly consists of Muslims that make almost 66.97% of the total population. Hindus are 29.63%,while sikh, buddhist/other people make only 2.03% and 1.36% of the total population.
The three major regions of Jammu & Kashmir are further divided into 22 districts. Jammu & Kashmir have 10 districts each under them while Ladakh has 2 districts under it.
