Trekking in Arunachal Pradesh

Bomdila-Dirang Trekking in Arunachal Pradesh is full of several ascents and descents and this trekking completes within 4 to 5 days. Leaving Lagam, climb to the crest of a ridge and turn W along the ridge to gain Saori La at 3225m. From the top, the path curves S, that keeps on going up and down along the crest of the ridge, crosses Chhandar (top) and descends to Namsu (2000m), 12km. The trail again climbs over a ridge, goes up and down to reach Khalibok and then descends steeply to Sangti (1600m), 12km. Turning sharply S from here, follow a stream and walk down to Dirang. From there take a bus to return to Bomdila.

Twang-Mago Trek is a very interesting trek of 5-6 days. The first three days from Jong to Mago pass though dense forests besides several lovely waterfalls is very exciting. Than from Tawang you have to take a bus which goes towards Se La and get off at Jong. You will see a footpath that leaves a the road heading N, crosses the Tawang Chu by a bridge, and curves NE along the Chu to reach Sho (2600m).

Go down to the bed of a stream then climb steeply to Broskar village. On the following day the trail from Broksar crosses and re crosses the Tawang Chu several times to reach Thimbu, a large village; good place to spend the night. From Thimbu walk for 1h, then turn E to enter Takar Phukpa (3220m). Continue crossing and re crossing the Tawang Chu (now called Mago Chu) several times and ascend gradually to Mago.

Last but not the least, Se La-Nurangang Trek is mainly a short trip for few days which involves crossing the 4180m high Chebra La. You have to take a bus from Tawang which goes towards Se La. It is possible to camp for the night here. Now follow the stream then cross another stream to reach Nuranang road head and from there to Tawang is a bus journey of 45km.

Most of the beaches are isolated from anything that might disturb the peace, all you have to do here is enjoy the beaches, wonderful food and hospitality of the locals. The long stretch of beaches are Miramar, Dona Paula, Vainguinim, Bambolim, Vasco da Gama, Bogmalo, Velsao, Cansaulim, Arrosim, Utorda, Majorda, Betalbatim, Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim, Mobor, Betul, Cabo DA ram, Agonda, Palolem, Galjibag and Polem.

MIRAMAR : Miramar beach is located south of Panjim with a 2 km of dark sand stretch overlooking Aguada Bay. Though the beach is noisy and less attractive than other places in Goa, if you want a quick escape from Panjim, this is an ideal place. The best time to be there is in the afternoon when you will only find the fishermen fixing their nets and few odd cafes serving the tourist. It would be a waste spending your holiday near this beach. Buses to Miramar ply from the Kadamba bus stand every fifteen minutes.

DONA PAULA : Dona Paula, is 9 km south west of Panjim on the south side of the rocky hammer shaped headland that divides the Zuari and Mandovi estuaries. The views from the top of the peninsula over the Miramar beach and the Mormugao harbor are quite pleasant enough. Another attraction is the old fishing jetty which shuttles across the bay to the Mormugao harbor four times a day, this twenty minute ride is a great fun There are regular buses from Panjim till 9 p.m dropping the passengers at Institute of Oceanography, where you can usually pick up an auto-rickshaws into the town. There are lot of water sport activities in this beach.

Dal Lake-Srinagar

Haven't you heard about the famous Dal Lake of Srinagar. The Dal Lake is the main beauty of Srinagar, and especially the Shikara sailing beautifully on it makes it a spectacular scene. The Dal Lake is connected to a number of other lakes of the Kashmir valley. The Dal Lake has approximately 500 Victorian-era wooden houseboats built on it. These houseboats were originally built as vacation homes for British administrators during the British Raj. Dal Lake is divided into four major basins called Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagin. The overall area covered by the Dal Lake is approximately 18 square kilometers.

The basin Lokut-Dal, of Dal Lake has an island in the center named Rup Lank or Char Chinari. Bod-Dal also has an island in the center known Sona Lank. There is a line of visiting places all along the shore of the lake. There are places like Mughal-era gardens, parks, and hotels. The lake sometimes freezes in the winter season. The Dal Lake last froze in January 2006 when the temperatures in Srinagar fell to minus 3.2 degrees, which is 1.2 degree less than the normal dip. Before that the lake had frozen in 1994. The flora found at the lake are lotus flower, water lilies and water chestnuts. The fauna found include birds like kingfishers and heron.

The other attractions apart from the houseboats, the Lake and Waterways, include kayaking, canoeing, water surfing and licensed angling on the lake. But in spit of such splendid attractions the tourism industry suffered loses from 1980s and 1990s due to the militants and terrorist attacks. In the 21st century, the Indian government took steps to minimize these attacks, thereby increasing the security at Srinagar. This led to a slight improvement in the profit of the tourism industry in Kashmir.

The Dal Lake is the first lake in the world that has wireless internet connectivity. This facility was implemented at the lake in November 2003. The lake has been affected in the recent years due to uncontrolled macrophytic growth, which led to the presence of exotic species like azolla , salvinia etc and silt.

Rajasthan was formed on 30 March 1949, when all erstwhile princely states ruled by Rajputs, known as Rajputana, merged into the Dominion of India. Hokersar Lake in Srinagar is a wetland situated where thousands of migratory birds come to from Siberia and other regions in the winter season. These birds use the wetlands in Kashmir as their transitory camps between September and October and again around spring. Hokersar is 14 kms north of Srinagar. It is a world class wetland that spreads over 13.75 square kilometres including the lake and the marshy area.

It is the most accessible and well-known wetlands of Kashmir. The other well known wetlands of Kashmir are Hygam, Shalibug and Mirgund. Birds found in Hokersar include Migratory ducks and geese like Brahminy Duck, Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Garganey, Greylag Goose, Mallard, Common Merganser, Northern Pintail, Common Pochard, Ferruginous Pochard, Red-Crested Pochard, Ruddy Shelduck, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal, and Eurasian Wigeon. These wetlands help in sustaining a large population of wintering, staging and breeding birds.

History of Shrinagar

Srinagar is situated in the Kashmir Valley, on the banks of the Jhelum River. The city of Srinagar was founded by King Pravarasena II over 2,000 years ago. The city is of the 3rd century B.C. when it was a part of the Maurya Empire, one of the largest empires of the Indian subcontinent. Ashoka introduced Buddhism into the Kashmir valley, and the adjoining regions around the city became a centre of Buddhism. In the 1st century BC, the region was under the control of Kushans and several rulers of this dynasty strengthened the Buddhist tradition. After this many rulers ruled this region including Vikramaditya (of Ujjain) and his successors and the Hun ruler Mihirkula during 6th century.

During the 14th century the Kashmir valley came under the control of the several Muslim rulers, including the Mughals. Srinagar became the capital during the reign of Yusuf Shah Chak who was tricked by Akbar when he failed to conquer Kashmir by force. Yusuf Shah Chak was then buried in Bihar and Akbar established the Mughal rule in Srinagar and Kashmir valley. In 1707 after the downfall of Mughal Empire due to the death of Aurangzeb, infiltrations into the valley of Kashmir began. The Pashtun tribes entered and kept increasing, and the Durrani Empire ruled the city for several decades.

In 1814 Raja Ranjit Singh ruled a major part of the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, and the city came under the influence of the Sikhs. In 1846, under the treaty Gulab Singh was made the independent and sovereign ruler of the region by the British. Srinagar became part of his kingdom but remained only until 1947 as one of the several princely states of undivided India. After, independence, in 1947 many Muslim tribes mostly the Pashtuns entered the valley. They were actively supported by elements of the Pakistani forces. They came to the valley to help the large number of local Muslim majority of Srinagar and the whole of Kashmir to gain independence from the Hindu Dogra Ruler.

This event was termed as the Indo-Pak war of 1947 and was the first war between India and Pakistan. While the Pakistan Army gained control of the majority of Srinagar it was not able to secure Srinagar Airport. This in turn enabled India to air lift the Indian Army along with all the heavy weapons and they were able to capture the city and its surroundings. Due to the fear of infiltration by armed forces and the fear of the possibility of his kingdom, including the city of Srinagar falling into civil war, Hari Singh signed a covenant in late 1947 with the Government of India.

According to the covenant Jammu and Kashmir was integrated into the newly formed Republic of India, conditioned on having a plebiscite after the conflict had ended. The Government of India immediately air-lifted Indian troops to Srinagar, and the city was prevented by the Indian Army. But in the meanwhile, the matter had already been escalated to the United Nations, and a cease fire was imposed under its authority, resulting into certain parts of Hari Singh's kingdom going into Pakistan's hands, which is now called the Azad Kashmir state under Pakistani administration.

The city of Srinagar has thereafter remained administered by India. Various historians, especially British Alaister Lamb, says that no such agreement was signed by the maharaja. The current status is that India and Pakistan have never been able to solve the problem of Kashmir which is still a disputed territory. Pakistan all these years have tried many times to capture Kashmir through infiltrations and terrorism but ended up loosing.

Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The city is famous for its lakes and houseboats and is the headquarters of Srinagar district. The geographical coordinates are 34°5′23″N 74°47′24″E. The highest temperature is 37 °C (99 °F) while the lowest is −14 °C (6.8 °F). The word Srinagar is composed of two Sanskrit words Sri, meaning abundance and wealth and Nagar, which means a city. Thus, the word Srinagar means a place of wealth and abundance. Sri is also the name of a goddess Lakshmi of Hindus, who is a symbol of prosperity and wealth.

The City of Lakes, as Srinagar is often called, is located on both the sides of the Vyath river. Vyath is the kashmiri name for Jhelum. Jhelum river passes through the city and moving forward making its way through the Kashmir valley deepens in to the Wular Lake. Srinagar is rich in old bridges and has nine of them connecting the two parts of the city. The city experiences warm summers from June through August, and winters from December-February. City also receives some snowfall from December to February but the snow seldom accumulates for longer periods.

Crops like wheat and Rice are grown fro local consumption in the back country lands of Srinagar. There are beautiful green orchards that produce a number of fruits, particularly apples. Srinagar and the surrounding areas serve as collecting points from where fruits and handicraft products are taken to several parts of the Indian subcontinent. According to the 2001 census Srinagar had a population of 894,940. The languages spoken in Srinagar are Kashmiri, Urdu, Hindi and English.

There are several arts prominent in the city. They are:

Bhand Pather-Bhand Pather is a form of traditional folk theater art form of play and dance and is performed by a group of about ten to fifteen artists. These artists depict the social evils in a satirical style accompanied by light music.
Chakri-Chakri is a major and popular form of Kashmiri folk music.
Sufiana Music-Sufiana Music is another form of Kashmiri genre of music which is also practiced in the city. The instruments used in the music include Santoor, Sitar, Kashmiri Saz, Tabla, and Wasool.
Hafiz Nagma-Hafiz Nagma is a form of dance which is performed to the accompaniment of Sufiana music. The dancer is a female while males play different instruments used in Sufiana music.

Dal Lake has potential for adventure sports like canoeing and water skiing. Water trekking is local name for three to four day trip along the Jhelum River to various lakes in a shikara with camping gear. Dachigam National Park 22 km and Pahalgam 95 km from the city are popular destinations for hikers, trekkers and fishers. There is the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in the city where international cricket matches have been played. Sports like football and cricket are also popular among school children.

According to the Nilamata Purana the Kashmir Valley's origin is from the waters. Ka means "water" and Shimir means "to desiccate". Thus, Kashmir stands for "a land desiccated from water", or vale. The Nilamata Purana gives the name Kaashmira to the Valley considering it to be an embodiment of Uma and it is the Kaashmir that the world knows today. But the Kaashmiris call it Kashir, which has also been derived phonetically from Kaashmir according to Aurel Stein who wrote introduction to Rajatarangini.

In the Rajatarangini, a history of Kashmir has been written by Kalhana in the 12th century. It is stated in Rajatarangini that the valley of Kaashmir was formerly a lake Satisar and was drained by the great rishi or sage, Kashyapa, son of Marichi, son of Brahma, by cutting the gap in the hills at Baramulla (Varaha-mula). Cashmere is a variant spelling of Kaashmir. Kashmir today is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. In the 19th century it was just a valley lying between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range. Today Kashmir includes the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir consisting of the Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh, the Pakistani-administered provinces of the Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir, and the Chinese-administered region of Aksai Chin.

But for India, Kashmir is a disputed territory. During the first half of the millennium Kashmir was an important center of Hinduism. Later it became a center of Buddhism. In the nineteenth century Shaivism rose in the region. In 1349, Shah Mirza became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir and inaugurated the line Salatin-i-Kashmir. For the next five centuries Kashmir was rules by Muslim monarchs, including the Mughals, who ruled until 1751, and the Afghan Durranis, who ruled until 1820. In 1820 the Sikhs under rule of Ranjit Singh, attacked Kashmir.

In 1846, under the treaty of Amritsar the region was purchased by the Dogra Ruler Gulab Singh from the British. Since then Kashmir was ruled by Dogra rulers under the rule of the British Crown. But his lasted until 1947, when the former princely state became a disputed territory. As told before the whole of Kashmir is now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China.

The above was a brief history of Kashmir. Now we precede to some information about Kashmir region of Jammu and Kashmir state of India. Kashmir region can be divided into 11 regions that are Kashmir Valley region, Anantnag District, Kulgam District, Pulwama District, Shopian District, Budgam District, Srinagar District, Ganderbal District, Bandipora District, Baramulla District and Kupwara District. According to 2001 census the population of Kashmir was more than 4 million out of which 95% were muslims and only 4% were hindus.

Kashmiri cuisine includes dum aloo, tzaman (a solid cottage cheese), rogan josh (lamb cooked in heavy spices), zaam dod (curd), yakhayn (lamb cooked in curd with mild spices), hakh (a spinach-like leaf), rista-gushtava (minced meat balls in tomato and curd curry) and the signature rice which is particular to Asian cultures. The traditional wazwan feast involves cooking meat or vegetables, usually mutton, in several different ways. Alcohol and Beef normally not widely consumed here. There are two styles of making tea in the region one is nun chai, or salt tea, which is pink in color and popular with locals and the other is kahwah, a tea for festive occasions, made with saffron and spices.

Kashmir has an agriculture based economy with the staple crop of the valley being rice. In addition, Indian corn, wheat, barley and oats were also grown. Given its temperate climate, it is suited for crops like asparagus, artichoke, seakale, broad beans, scarletrunners, beetroot, cauliflower and cabbage. Fruit trees are common in the valley, and the cultivated orchards yield pears, apples, peaches, and cherries. The chief trees are deodar, firs and pines, chenar or plane, maple, birch and walnut, apple, cherry.

Kashmir was earlier known world-wide when Cashmere wool was exported to other regions and nations. These exports have decreased a lot due to decreased abundance of the cashmere goat and increased competition from China. But now Kashmir is well known for Pashmina shawls, silk carpets, rugs, kurtas, and pottery. Saffron too is grown in Kashmir and fruits and vegetables are also exported to the Middle East. Srinagar is known for its silver-work, papier mache, wood-carving, and the weaving of silk.

Peer Khoh-Adventure Travel Tour Jammu

Peer Khoh is a cave shrine located on the Circular Road, about 3.5 kms from the heart of the town of Jammu. It is situated to the north-east of Jammu. But it could not be developed much due to encroachment of most of the area by the Gujjars and Bakerwals. They even have begun permanent construction upon the forest land. Frequent breaking out of forest fires is another cause for the destruction of forests.

According to the history of Mahamaya Temple, thousands of years back, there was a state known as Dhara Nagri. Dhara Nagri was a beautiful, clean and green city and was ruled by the king Vikramjeet. King Vikramjeet was an honest, truthful and religious man. He was a good administrator and everybody was happy and prosperous during his reign. In case of any disaster the king used to provide all reliefs to the people. People had full faith on the Mahamaya Goddess and thought that was because of Her boons/blessings Dhara Nagri was quite safe and progressive. But after the death of king Vikramjeet, his kingdom fell in to the hands of his and started to fall down in reputation.

It was because Vikramjeet's son was not well versed with the governing rules. He used to pass his time mostly in evil deeds, due to which the people of Dhara Nagri city always remained surrounded with troubles and had no hope to get justice. Soon many people left the city and ultimately the ruling system comprised only of cruel people who accepted bribes from the general masses. The people rarely used to go to the Mahamaya temple because of which the Godess Mahamaya became annoyed at the King and the dwelling people. She showed her wonders by way of bringing an earth quake.

Due to the earthquake, the whole city of Dhara Nagri was got buried into the debris and especially all the buildings of the king. Population of the city considerably decreased and many alive people left the city and settled somewhere else. The area became unpopulated and later on converted into thick forest. The Mahamaya temple got covered in the forests and was destroyed. The idol of the Goddess was also buried under the soil in a corner of hill forest on the bank of the river Tawi. Thus, according to this legend the idol of the Mahamaya temple is very old which survived the earth quake destruction. According to some well known historians the temple of Goddess Mahamaya dates back to Satyug.

Another legend says that when Maharaja Gulab Singh was ruling Jammu from 1822 to 1857, one night the Goddess Mahamaya appeared in his dream and said ‘‘My idol is lying beneath the soil in a corner of forest hill on the bank of the Tawi river since long and nobody has paid any attention to lift it for keeping in a temple duly built in.’’ She further said, ‘‘Lift this idol at the earliest and establish with full worship after building a temple.’’ Maharaja Gulab Singh then came to the spot and searched for the idol but was not able to find it, so, the Goddess Mahamaya herself led the way and showed the spot to the King. Maharaja Gulab Singh on finding the idol constructed the temple and installed the idol with proper respect and worship. If this legend is considered to be correct then the same 150 years idol of the Goddess Mahamaya is there in the temple.

But some historians, believe that Goddess Mahamaya came in the dream of Maharaja Ranbir Singh instead of Maharaja Gulab Singh who was the son of the latter. Thus, Maharaja Ranbir Singh is believed to have build the temple for keeping the searched out idol in it. It is also said that due to heavy rains accompanied with soil erosion/land slides and floods during 1986, the temple was damaged and thus a new temple was constructed under the supervision of former Governor Jagmohan. Metaled road has been constructed from Nagrota bypass to Mahamaya Temple for the pilgrims so that they can bring in their vehicles upto the temple. A hall for the pilgrims has also been constructed.

From the Mahamaya Temple one can have the full glamorous view of the Jammu City. The climate here is pleasant and the Tawi basin is very attractive. On March 30th 2002 militants attacked the Raghunath Temple for the first time. The same year on 24th of November the temple was again attacked. But the damage done at this time was greater than the first. Nine persons were killed and forty-two were injured. In the encounter that followed with the security forces, one militant was gunned down ending the siege. A jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force was also killed. Another terrorist attack was simultaneously launched at the Shivalya Mandir which is also known as Panchbakhar mandir and is only a few hundred meters away from the Raghunath Temple. The militants targeted devotees at the Raghunath Temple as they made their way into the complex by passing the security ring at the gates. They sneaked in much deeper than they had done in March and opened fired indiscriminately.

Akhnoor had an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 55% of the males and 45% of females literate. 11% of the population was under the age of 6. The languages spoken in Akhnoor are Dogri, Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi and English.

Akhnoor has its historical importance too. It has many stories related to it. One being from the Mahabharata which says that Pandavas hid in the caves in Akhnoor during their period of Agyaatwaas. Another story says that Akhnoor was earlier called Virat Nagar, but it came to be known as Akhnoor during the Mughal reign. The reason behind this is that the Mughal emperor's wife had vision problem in her eyes and she was prescribed to wash her eyes with the holy water of Chenab using some ayurvedic medicines by a local Hindu priest. The queen strictly followed the prescription and her vision was restored. Hence the city was named Akhnooer as in Urdu the word 'noor' means vision/glow/shine and the word 'aankh' means the eye.

Akhnoor is very near to the border which is around 18 km by road, and the aerial distance is just around 8 km. On 10th September 1992, the main bridge over the Chenab river was washed out, and was rebuilt on 13th April 1994. There are many places of tourist interest in and around Akhnoor. The places of visit in Akhnoor include Kameshwar Temple which is believed to be 5000 yrs old, remains of Harappa civilization, Jiapota bank of river Chenab, Pandav cave, Durga Mandir at Jiapota, Sikh Gurudwara in Chandian, remains of Akhnoor Fort, Peer Baba in Bal-da-Bagh and the newly constructed attraction the 2 KM walk-way constructed along the bank of the river Chenab from Gurudwara to Hari-Mandir, on the one side of which is river Chenab flowing and on the other side are the rocks.

There is a golden throne made of 120 kg of pure gold also kept in the museum. The banks of the river Chenab are a happening site to watch in the evenings of the summer season, because a very large number of people gather there to get relief from the heat and enjoy in the cold breeze that flows along the banks. The water temperature is around 25 degree Celsius in summer and many people take a dip or swim. A good number of hawkers with eatables also come to earn their living.

A new concrete, 2 way bridge has also been built now by 'D2 Construction Company' which is 0.5 KM upstream the present steel bridge. It is the first longest caterpillar bridge in India which is 180 mtrs in length. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India on 13 April, 2008. The Chenab river meets the plains in Akhnoor, just north-west of Jammu. This was originally the route to Srinagar in the Moghul era. Jehangir, who died on the way to Kashmir, was temporarily buried at Chingas. Akhnoor is also related with the legend of Soni-Mahiwal. The whole area commands a panoromic view. A nice place to be in.

Gauri Kund is an important Hindu pilgrimage site on the way to Kedarnath and is on a sharp descent from Dolma La. It is situated at an altitude of around 5608m in the Garhwal Himalayas. Gauri Kund is at a distance of 5 kms from Son Prayag. It is the last bus stop on the Kedarnath route. People from the tour to Gauri Kund bathe in the hot water pond which is located here, before visiting the Gauri Devi temple. It is also known as the lake of compassion.

Gauri Kund has mythological importance too and has been referred to in the Shiv Puran. It is said that Gauri Kund was the setting for the legend of Parvati and how Lord Ganesha acquired his elephant head. According to the legend once Goddess Parvati was bathing in the emerald waters of the kund when she fashioned an image of Ganesha from the soap suds on her body and breathed life into it. She placed this image at the entrance of her home to prevent anyone from entering. Lord Shiva returned at this point of time and was stopped by Ganesha. At this Lord Shiva got angry and cut off the boy's head. Goddess Parvati was inconsolable and became very furious. She wanted Lord Shiva to to bring the boy to life.

Lord Shiva had no way out and went searching for a head. Lord Shiva tried very hard but could not find an apt head, so He took the head of a wandering elephant and placed it on the body. Life was restored and Parvati got her son back. Another legend attached to this place is that Gauri (Goddess Parvati) wanted to win over Lord Shiva and thus started carrying out ascetic and yogic practices. According to local tradition Gauri kund is the spot where Gauri lived while carrying out these practices. Lord Shiva was impressed at this and it was here that Shiva finally revealed his love for her and both of them were married at Triyugi Narayan, which is 10 miles away from Gauri Kund.

Gauri Kund is said to be the road head for Kedarnath which is another nine miles up the path and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. Kedarnath is connected to Shiva, and Gauri Kund is connected with Goddess Parvati, also known as Gauri. The Gauri Kund has an ornamental gateway with the lion motifs and the temple here is built at a lower level than the surrounding plaza. Gauri Kund Temple has the idol of Goddess Parvati where devotees offer prayers. Gauri Kund Temple is considered to be one of the important tourist attractions in Uttaranchal, specially visited by those on their way to Kedarnath, and thus is an important contributor to Uttaranchal Tourism.

A popular legend about this temple says that Sudheet a devotee of Lord Shiva was killed by mistake by Lord Shiva through his trident in order to protect his spouse Uma(Goddess Parvati). It is said that Lord Shiva was in samadhi when he heard Goddess Uma's loud cry and shot his 'trishul'(trident). But it was Shiva's devotee, Sudheet who approached Goddess Uma to pay his respectful homage and frightened her with his demonic look. The trident killed Sudheet and Shiva on realizing his mistake offered to revive him but Sudheet preferred death given by Lord Shiva Himself instead of life. Lord Shiva was very touched by his devotion and thus He named the place on Sudheet's name forever and the broken trident in three pieces, is still installed in the temple.

Pilgrims visit the shrine on the full moon night of the rainy season or Shravan to worship the famous Trident and a mace, which is said to belong to Lord Shiva. They take holy bath in the sacred Devika River, which originates at this place and disappears magically among the rocks a few kilometers down stream. The agrarian uprising that he led in the Punjab was the starting point after which the Dal Khalsa, the Sikh Misls and Maharaja Ranjit Singh built the edifice which finally culminated with Ranjit Singh capturing Lahore in 1799 and establishing the Sikh Kingdom of the Punjab, ending the dark period of Mughals. Baba Banda Bahadur was brutally murdered by the Mughals in 1716 to satisfy the disrespect and defeat they had to face due to Baba Banda Bahadur.

According to Hindu Mythology a number of legends have been suggested about the discovery of this cave. One such important legend is that related to the demon named Bhasmasura. Bhasmasura after a long meditation of Lord Shiva obtained a blessing to end the life of any one by just putting his hand on that person. After obtaining it, the devil tried to end the Lord Shiva. On seeing the devil's evil intention, Lord Shiva ran to save himself from the power of the demon and entered into this cave which is presently known as Shiv Khori. Then Lord Vishnu came to Lord Shiva's rescue in the guise of Mohini and asked the demon to dance with her according to her tune. When the demon started dancing according to the actions and tune of Mohini, Bahasmasura took his hand at his head and with his own power he himself was destroyed.

As per the legends 33 crores deities reside in this cave in shape of pindies and natural milky water is falling on them continuously from the top of the cave. According to another Mythological Story about the discovery of this cave is that it was discovered by a Muslim Shepherded who was in search of his missing goat and by chance went into the cave. However he was very much startled to see a number of saints inside the cave, who were impressed by Lord Shiva's divine power and he too started pooja there. Later, the shepherded disclosed the existence of this cave to people. According to the legends it is believed that a number of famous saints have been closely associated with this cave and have spent decades inside this cave for spiritual attainment and meditation.
